A county seat the lake covered

Harrison is a census designated place in Hamilton County with 7,902 residents in 2020. The 2025 Gazetteer lists about 6.7 square miles of land and 1.8 of water. It grew up near Vann's Ferry and served as the Hamilton County seat from 1840 until the courthouse moved to Chattanooga in 1870.

When the Tennessee Valley Authority completed Chickamauga Dam in 1940, much of the old town flooded. Foundations, roads, and guard rails can still be seen around Harrison Bay. Water here is part of the landscape in a very literal way.

Because Harrison covers about nine square miles including 1.8 of water, one property can sit far from the lake and another right on a cove. Distance from the shoreline changes the questions, so tell us how far you are and whether the land slopes toward the water.

Named places along the shoreline

Harrison Bay State Park, Bear Trace Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, Skull Island, a TVA recreational area, and the Hamilton County Landfill are listed within Harrison. Use them to say where you live, not as indicators of ground conditions on your lot.

Shoreline land may be owned by TVA or others. Confirm your boundary and ask the relevant authority what applies before moving soil, clearing near the water, or cutting along the edge.

After the wind comes through

Storm damage landscape cleanup addresses outdoor areas that need attention after severe weather. Describe whether branches are on lawn, beds, or paths and whether access to the property has changed. Do not approach unstable trees or damaged structures.

Tree removal can address a specific tree. Identify it, note nearby structures, and tell us what you want to retain. Seasonal yard cleanup can follow once the larger work is done, which helps a shoreline property feel orderly again.

Cleanup planning near water

Cleanup near a shoreline has extra considerations. Debris can wash into the water, slopes can be slick, and trees can be hard to reach. Photograph the damage from a safe distance and list what needs to be moved.

Tell us what must stay, such as docks, plantings, and boundary markers. We can then discuss the sequence, from clearing larger limbs to a final seasonal cleanup. Never enter water or unstable ground to move debris yourself.

Questions about work near Harrison

Is Harrison today the same as the old Harrison?

Not exactly. Much of the original town was flooded by Chickamauga Dam in 1940, and today's census place is smaller than its former extent.

Can I clear trees along the lake edge?

Shoreline land may belong to TVA or others. Confirm your boundary and requirements before any clearing, then share the details with us.

What should I do about a damaged tree after a storm?

Stay clear of unstable trees and damaged structures. Take photographs from a safe distance and describe the location for your inquiry.

Who owns the debris that washes onto my shoreline?

Ownership can be complicated near TVA land. Ask the relevant authority, and describe the location and boundaries when you contact us.
